Stone wall plate

// October 24th, 2010 / /
Rather than placing painting on the wall, why not use stone plates, carved, sculpted.
The natural color, the bright, dull, nuances, all change over day light.
Very rich in shapes, colors, shades, these works are changing the tone in a house, and fit perfectly.
From celtic patterns collected at the British Museum to abstract forms, I decline my favorite topics on this format.
You can see them in the gallery.

Un paysage est une etat d'ame - "A landscape is a state of mind."

/ / October 17, 2010 / /
Writing words on landscapes creates meaning,  forms, games etc.
But beyond that, we contact this basic experience that we all did:
a rainy day, Grey ... we feel blusy
A sunny day, heat ... joy is easier ...
really?
I tried to explore the emotional states. On rice paper, ink.
A series of small landscapes stars.
The series is entitled "A landscape is a state of mind."

Lao-tseu - Un autre chemin (an other way)

October 4th 2010
Dao de Jing - Lao-tseu
Sometimes a nice book to re-open.
I decided to use the text as a graphical medium.
Plans, lines, curved or shaped lines, symbols, characters... all these items are playing together, creating a very strong drawing, laquer on canvas.
I dispay the full chapter 64, with chinise spelling, and my own version of the translation, this to fit my own understanding of this philosophy, and also to play with the length of sentences, and graphical position of words.

Rice paper and calligraphy

/ / September 27th, 2010 / /
Mongolian calligraphy inspired me this summer. So many years of my experiences, techniques, inspirations converged to a new way, a new opportunity to write or draw.
From there I created pieces: black and red ink, gold leaf or dust, on rice paper.
Intense work, one part very dynamic, driven by water and ink transformation to capture the emotion, the instant, an other very slow and static, for the texts.
4 are shown in the painting gallery.

Re-Composition 1

/ / September 22nd, 2010 / /
Re-composition is the title of a new series.
Built from forms of growing dimensions; it is a collection of geometrical parts, leading to the re-composition of the canvas.
On another way, is also staging the evolution of a form, maybe of emotional forms.
There are (so?) contradictions there. For exemple, the square is closed by the rectangle (red), but the triangle is open.
Depending on the variations, directions are changed, form are transformed, and other symbolic messages are grafted.
These paintings mostly use lacquer and gold leaf. We can find oil, other metals, reliefs, ...

Re-Composition 1
The first canvas. It is based on the formal construction. The gold and shades in the dark amplify depth.
Re-Composition 2
Another variation, different atmosphere. Contours are more blurred, and a strong opposition is set up: surface vs area.
3 Re-Composition
Other changes, other senses. And this time with a message.
I used a text of Gandhi; one part is placed as an enigma. Can you solve it? But the real question is: Should it be resolved? ...
To see in the sculpture gallery.

Masks

/ / September 12th, 2010 / /
Venetian Mask, marble.
This second piece, white veined marble, is an echo to the firstone, that was almost a black marble.
A Venetian mask base, in his undecorated form, often expresses two faces. The left and right part are substantially different.
In the sculptures, I amplified this by placing them on a curved axis.
The first mask was a form of parenthesis-open. The second is a form of parenthesis-close.
Because a mask is also a parenthesis from life.

Special stones

/ / September 3rd, 2010 / /
My stone works are always inspired by the stone itself: its forms, colors, textures.
I always looked for special stones. For example, I enjoy Carrara marble with lot of colors, lines...
I decided to pursue this path of sublimation of matter, through exceptional stones, although they may be rare.
First step was my research of unusual coloured stones, such Tavel stone including red, orange ... while they are usualy known to be only white / beige and gray / blue.
I now work also intrinsically beautiful stones, such as Jasper, Fossilized Wood, associations Marble + Pyrite, Fluorite, etc. ...
Obviously, the work is much more difficult, sometimes almost crazy ... but I love it. And the results are ... stuning.

Pierrechemin

/ / August 26th, 2010 / /
"Pierrechemins"
The "pierrechemins" are scrolls of stone. Carved on the scroll are words, symbols, objects.
Somehow parchment, because they carry some writing (carving), somehow stone, because they are real sculptures, displaying two parchment rolls and the scroll.
These are sculpture, calligraphy, symbols, decorative elements.
All of my favorite subjects converge in these parts.

Pierrechemin "Accents Tibetain" : an original calligraphy made from strains of the Tibetan alphabet. This pattern appears over my work. We see here something about air ... a bird? This part is a Tavel stone.

Pierrechemin "Temps" , a parchment that defies time ... Tavel stone, and gold leaf. A few pink lines on the stone, which reinforces the timeless message.

Pierrechemin "Vie" , the word Vie (life) engraved on a marble of Morocco. Grained, multicolored, shiny and amazing. An exceptional stone, which bears the word with all purity.
To see in the sculpture gallery.

Resonance

March 13th, 2010
"Resonance" is the name of a series of paintings 2009-present.
A canvas contains the axes. At the most basic we have diagonals, up or down. These lines symbolize, in this series, the evolution of our emotions. From the small inner light to the great fear, from fury to the inner wisdom, our emotions are in constant evolution. I try to cross them, touch them, and translate.

entre ciel et terre

March 13th, 2010
"Between Heaven and Earth" is the name of a series of paintings 2007-2009.
At the beginning they were abstract shapes on canvas 100x50 vertical. The low rounded from and the top rectangular one, and between forms mixing, separating, contradicting each other, complementing each other.
The form has evolved, the shapes are connected, a calligraphy came hidden.
Finally, a vertical axis linked the shape of the bottom and top, chinese calligraphy of the word emperor, who made the connection between heaven, earth and humankind.

From Egypt to Pioneer

February 26th, 2010
Writing and drawing always allowed us to pass messages. To the others, but also to the gods, to the afterlife (some Egyptians), and now (finally, in 1972!) Space via the Pioneer plaque in X (and XI).
Produced by Carl Sagan, Frank Drake and Linda Sagan, this plate is information about the position of the earth and human beings. It is now adrift in space in the body of 2 satellites, Pioneer X and XI.
Following my work on Egypt, hieroglyphics and symbolism, and other civilizations, this plaque is getting into my work, as another "symbol" of the symbolic.
The result will be visible in the exhibitions of April.

Pi...

February 6, 2009
My stone carvings are inspired by symbols, but also by the construction rules. The sizes, positions, proportions are not defined by chance, but by mathematical rules. The absolute approach is to work directly on the numbers, their digits, their harmony. Here the first 10 digits of Pi, built with various organizations. Imagine my surprise when a friend said to me to look at Francois Morellet' work. Indeed, I didn't know. It's amazing, I'm reproducing part of his journey ... So my approach will be enriched... And evolve more ...

About defects

December 27, 2008
I have seen exceptional artists curve perfect balls, stone, 1, 2, 10, 100 ... Incredible. Then take them back, and add... a defect!
My approach also tended to perfection.
But will never reach it.
When I see I'm doing a defect, sometimes I keep it ... They are indispensable.
For sure, they answer the question: "Has this been done by a machine or a human being?".
But much more!
The default is random.
Every creation is born of a desire combined with a chance.
No, I did not want to do this as this is exactly ...
Defect, it's life, it's work, it's life at work.
It should not be denied, it should not be created. It happens ... and is accepted.

Agate ?

November 13th, 2008
A new test: the cutting of agate. Good and bad news: against all odds, it is feasible. Very slow, very accurate ... The carbide must be very sharp. The bad news: for a drawing of 15x15cm, I destroyed a diamond, and a few millimeters of carbide ... Hardness 6.7 to 7 ... To be continued ...

Yin-Yang 3 elements

February 25, 2007
Between Yin-Yang and Triskell, Yin Yang-3 elements are often found. The drawing "without thickness" is not necessarily immediate and may take several trials before finding the right size. When it comes to carving, a line is having a thickness. The question is to find the radii of the circles with minimum trials. Calculations done for a carved stone are given here. Demonstration and equation. It works, but you need a ruler and a simple calculation. Perhaps soon a totally graphical way? Meanwhile, these formulas allow accurate drawing at the first time.
